Irish language expert Professor Regina Uí Chollatáin appointed new Chair of Foras na Gaeilge

(opens in a new window)Professor Regina Uí Chollatáin is the new Chair of Foras na Gaeilge, the public body responsible for the promotion of the Irish language throughout the island of Ireland.
Head of the UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore, her appointment follows a nomination to the North/South Language Body Board by the Irish Government.
This organisation, though its two agencies Foras na Gaeilge and Tha Boord O Ulstèr-Scotch, works to promote the Irish Language on an all-island basis, as well as create greater awareness in the use of Ullans and of Ulster-Scots cultural issues.
“I am delighted to be appointed Chair of Foras na Gaeilge," said Professor Uí Chollatáin. "I am looking forward to working with the Board and building on existing projects with many new possibilities”.
"There is much energy and innovation in the Irish language sector at this time and it is a privilege to be part of this work."
A native of Letterkenny in County Donegal and President of the Global Irish Diaspora Congress, Professor Uí Chollatáin is Chair and Professor of Modern Irish at University College Dublin, and has been the Head of the UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore since 2015.
Her main areas of research and publishing are revival, Irish language journalism and print culture.
A member of the MoLI Academic Advisory Board and the Irish Folklore Council, she was also a member of the original Board of TG4 and Chair of the Irish Newspaper and Periodical History Forum.

Is í Ceann Scoil na Gaeilge, an Léinn Cheiltigh agus an Bhéaloidis UCD í agus ceapadh í i ndiaidh do Rialtas na hÉireann í a ainmniú le bheith ar Bhord an Fhorais Teanga Thuaidh/Theas.
San obair a dhéanann an dá ghníomhaireacht dá cuid, is iad sin Foras na Gaeilge agus Tha Boord O Ulstèr-Scotch, tá an eagraíocht ag obair leis an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn ar bhonn uile-oileáin, chomh maith le daoine a chur ar an eolas faoi úsáid Ultaise agus faoi chúrsaí cultúrtha a bhaineann le hUltais.
“Tá lúcháir orm glacadh leis an cheapachán mar Chathaoirleach ar Bhord Fhoras na Gaeilge,” arsa an tOllamh Uí Chollatáin.
“Tá mé ag súil go mór le bheith ag obair le comhaltaí an Bhoird le tógáil ar a bhfuil déanta agus le féidearthachtaí nua a ríomh. Tá earnáil na Gaeilge beo agus lán le fuinneamh faoi láthair agus is pribhléid í a bheith páirteach san obair seo.”
As Leitir Ceanainn i gContae Dhún na nGall ó dhúchas í an tOllamh Uí Chollatáin, atá mar Uachtarán ar Chomhdháil Dhomhanda Dhiaspóra na hÉireann. Tá sí ina Cathaoirleach agus ina hOllamh le Nua-Ghaeilge sa Choláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath, agus tá sí mar Cheann Scoil na Gaeilge, an Léinn Cheiltigh agus an Bhéaloidis UCD ó bhí 2015 ann.
Is iad na príomhréimsí taighde agus foilsitheoireachta atá aici ná an athbheochan, iriseoireacht na Gaeilge agus an cultúr cló.
Is comhalta í ar Bhord Comhairleach Acadúil Mhúsaem Litríochta na hÉireann agus ar Chomhairle Bhéaloideas Éireann, agus bhí sí ina comhalta ar Bhord Bunaidh TG4 agus ina Cathaoirleach ar Fhóram Stair Nuachtán agus Tréimhseachán na hÉireann.
