UCD Irish language graduate joins TG4's weather forecasting team

Posted 26 January 2024

A UCD Irish language graduate is the latest addition to TG4's weather and continuity team.

Cork native Darragh Ó Caoimh joined the Irish broadcaster's weather panel as part of its efforts to diversify the presenters for its An Aimsir Láithreach TV weather bulletins.

First learning Irish at school, Darragh undertook a Masters in Modern Irish at UCD after he received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach Irish at the University of Montana for the 2022/2023 academic year.

“TG4 is one of Ireland's most important broadcasting and cultural institutions, and to join it at this exciting time in its history is a real honour and a brilliant opportunity,” he said.

“I hope I can add to the wonderful service TG4 already provides, and am looking forward to working with everyone in Baile na hAbhann, all of whom have been so welcoming and friendly to me since I've started.

“Here's hoping for a heatwave this summer; I don't want to be the bearer of too much bad news!

Darragh, who co-presented the Junior Eurovision Éire song competition on TG4, was joined as the latest addition of the TG4 weather team alongside Caitríona Nic an tSaoir.

The new presenters will be based at the TG4 Headquarters in Conamara.

Darragh is not the first UCD Irish language graduate to take up a role presenting the Irish language station's popular weather forecasts.

Dublin native Donncha Ó Murchú, who studied Irish and History at UCD, joined TG4 in 2020, and Galway native Orla Ní Fhinneadha, who completed a MEd in Education in 2016 at UCD, joined the Irish broadcaster in 2018 following a public call out looking for new presenters.

Céimí sa Ghaeilge ó UCD mar chuid de Fhoireann Réamhaisnéis na hAimsire TG4

Arna phostáil ar 26 Eanáir 2024

Tá céimí Gaeilge ó UCD ar an duine is déanaí atá ceaptha ar fhoireann réamhaisnéis na haimsire TG4.

Bhain Darragh Ó Caoimh, arbh as Corcaigh ó dhúchas dó, áit amach ar phainéal aimsire chraoltóir na hÉireann agus é mar chuid dá n-iarrachtaí lena chinntiú go bhfuil painéal láithreoirí ilghnéitheacha acu do nuacht na haimsire, An Aimsir Láithreach, ar an teilifís.

Tar éis dó an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim i dtús aimsire ar scoil, thug Darragh faoi Mháistreacht sa Nua-Ghaeilge i UCD, agus ina dhiaidh sin bhain sé Scoláireacht Fulbright amach agus fuair sé deis an Ghaeilge a mhúineadh ag Ollscoil Montana don bhliain acadúil 2022/2023.

“Tá TG4 ar cheann de na hinstitiúidí craoltóireachta agus cultúrtha is tábhachtaí atá in Éirinn, agus is mór an onóir dom é agus is iontach an deis é, áit a bhaint amach ann, i dtréimhse iontach dá ré,” a deir sé.

“Tá súil agam gur féidir liom an tseirbhís nuachta iontach atá á cur ar fáil cheana féin ag TG4 a neartú, agus táim ag súil go mór dul chun oibre le gach duine beo i mBaile na hAbhann, siadsan ar fad a bhfuil fáilte Uí Cheallaigh curtha acu romham, agus atá chomh cineálta liom, ó thosaigh mé san áit.”

“Le cúnamh De, beidh tonn teasa linn an samhradh seo; Níor mhaith liom go mbeadh an iomarca de chailleach an uafáis i mo chuid nuachta!”

Beidh Darragh, a bhí ina chomhláithreoir ar an gcomórtas amhránaíochta Junior Eurovision Éire ar TG4, i dteannta Chaitríona Nic an tSaoir, agus iad ar an mbeirt is déanaí atá mar chuid de fhoireann réamhaisnéis na haimsire TG4.

Beidh na láithreoirí nua ag obair as Ceannáras TG4 i gConamara.

Ní hé Darragh an chéad chéimí Gaeilge ó UCD chun tabhairt faoi ról réamhaisnéisí móréilimh aimsire stáisiún na Gaeilge a chur i láthair.

Thosaigh Donncha Ó Murchú, de bhunús na hArdcathrach, a rinne staidéar ar an nGaeilge agus ar an Stair i UCD in 2020 agus Orla Ní Fhinneadha, arbh as Gaillimh di agus a chríochnaigh Máistreacht san Oideachas i UCD, in 2016, ag obair le craoltóir na hÉireann in 2018, agus glaoch poiblí ar bun ar thóir láithreoirí.
