This module builds on the foundation in Chinese language provided in Chinese Language Experience I. The aim of this module is to enable students to further develop their accuracy, fluency and overall competence in Chinese with a significant focus on post-beginner level listening and speaking.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On satisfactory completion of this course, students should be able to:
1) Understand sentences on topics such as dining and daily routines;
2) Read simple texts, standardized messages, phrases or expressions on the topics given above;
3) Enunciate learned phrases and sentences with correct pronunciation;
4) Conduct simple conversations relating to learned materials;
5) Comprehend words and phrases from simple questions, statements and common expressions;
6) Build up a vocabulary of 300 words.


Indicative Module Content:

Week 1
Topic: Travel
Language points: The auxiliary verb “要”;The adverb of Degree “最”;“几” and “多”:expressions of approximate numbers.

Week 2
Topic: Daily routines
Language points: Questions using “是不是”;The pronoun “每”;The interrogative pronoun “多”

Week 3
Topic: Colour
Language points: The phrase “的”;The numeral classifier “一下”;The modal adverb “真”

Week 4
Topic: Birthday
Language points: The structure “是……的” used to emphasize the agent of an action; The adverb of time “已经”

Week 5
Revision

Week 6
Topic: Shopping
Language points: The adverb “就”;The modal adverb “还/吧”

Week 7
Topic: Hobby
Language points: The adverbial modifier “有点儿”and “一点儿”; The interrogative pronoun “怎么” and “怎么样”;

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will learn basic conversations on daily topics through interactive workshops, oral practice, vocabulary work and tutorials. The course also introduces students to learning Chinese with the assistance of computers, smartphones and other online resources.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

In order to take this module, students should have prior learning experience which is equivalent to HSK Level 1.

Learning Exclusions:

Students who are native Mandarin speakers are not eligible to take this module as an elective.

The lecturer reserves the right to assess the language competence of all students. Students whose competence is incompatible with the level of their chosen elective module will be advised to transfer to a more appropriate language module.
