Paul Haran to lead UCD College of Business and Law.
Mr. Paul Haran
Former Secretary General of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mr Paul Haran will lead UCD’s new College of Business and Law, the university announced today.
Mr Haran, who was instrumental in the development and implementation of policies that contributed directly to the creation of the Celtic Tiger, finished his 7 year term as Secretary General in 2004.
UCD, under its president, Dr Hugh Brady, has recently undergone a radical restructuring. 90 former departments and 11 former faculties are now formed into 35 schools under 5 colleges. The new structure came into effect on 1 September and interim principals appointed. Mr Haran is the first Principal of a College to be appointed via open competition to the five-year office.
Announcing his appointment, Dr Brady stressed the value of bringing in an individual of Mr Haran’s stature to the university. “The role of the principal of the college is to provide vision and guidance. Paul Haran has shown both in his capacity as a truly influential public servant.
He sought to enhance the environment where both society and the economy would prosper and contributed to a number of critical initiatives such as the formation of the €600million funded SFI (Science Foundation Ireland), the introduction of a single rate of corporation tax and the reform of Ireland’s labour markets.
Mr Haran has a very keen sense of the academic mission of the College of Business and Law, combined with a wider understanding of the complexity of the university at large. His appointment will have an impact both nationally and internationally. The selection board, which included representatives of the academic community in both business and law, were impressed with Mr Haran’s sensitivity to the academic mission and ethos of the College”
The president paid tribute to Professor Frank Roche who has acted as interim principal of the College. “Professor Roche has shared his wonderful expertise as a fine academic, a successful entrepreneur and a motivator of people. I am most grateful to him for fulfilling the interim role.”
The UCD College of Business and Law is made up of the internationally recognised UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, the UCD Quinn School of Business and the UCD School of Law.
