16th NovaUCD 'Entrepreneurs Live!' Seminar Series (November 2011)

NovaUCD is delighted to annouce details of the 16th NovaUCD 'Entrepreneurs Live!' seminar series. This seminar series, which will be delivered in association with the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board, commences in September 2011 and runs over three months.

The theme for this series is “Just Start – Setting-Up and Running a Company in Challenging Times”

Speaker Profiles

Jim Breen, Founder & CEO, Pulse Learning and TriGrandPrix.

Jim Breen is a serial entrepreneur and is founder and CEO of two companies, TriGrandPrix and Pulse Learning.

Jim’s vision for TriGrandPrix is to create a globally successful triathlon business that is focused on Athlete Care.  The  goal at TriGrandPrix, starting in 2010 is to create a safe, professionally organised, world-class series of triathlon events. TriGrandPrix 2011, hosted six experiences, thus creating a global TriGrandPrix championship.

Jim founded PulseLearning in 1999.  PulseLearning design customised learning solutions for clients in regulated industries. PulseLearning has its Development Center Headquarters located at the Kerry Technology Park, Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland. Operating globally, the company also has offices in Limerick, the U.K., the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

In 2007, Jim was shortlisted for the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and graduated from the Executive Development program at Stanford University in California.

Before founding PulseLearning, Jim held senior management positions for the KOSTAL Group and Kleinhuis, where he introduced significant cost savings through the implementation of process improvement ideas and successfully established a German subsidiary manufacturing operation in Ireland.

Dr Liam Kelly, CEO & Founder, Nualight

Dr Liam Kelly founded Nualight in 2004. His previous commercial LED activities include the establishment of CorkOpt Ltd. in 1994, to develop and manufacture LED-based luminaires for the machine vision industry. CorkOpt was acquired by USA-based StockerYale Inc. in 2000 and Liam continued as Managing Director until 2003. He was also a founder-director of Millimetre Wave Technology Ltd., and of Farran Technology Ltd, an imaging and communications systems manufacturer, until its acquisition by the Smiths Group plc in 2005.


Prior to his commercial interests, Liam spent twenty years in various senior roles in University College Cork including Associate Professor of Microelectronics. He has a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California and is a founding director of Optronics-Ireland and the Irish National Microelectronic Research Centre.
