Event Location: Room J208, UCD School of English, Drama and Film, UCD, Belfield,
Dublin 4.
Event Overview:
This is a day-long workshop, organised by UCD’s James Joyce Research Centre, and is open to students and those with an interest in Joyce's Finnegans Wake.
Joyce's Finnegans Wake, published in 1939, is widely seen as one of the most prodigiously original texts of the twentieth century. It lastingly changed the nature of fiction and shattered the boundaries of the English language. A dauntingly brilliant text, it baffles and captivates its readers in equal measure. Finnegans Wake is most effectively explored in a reading group and best unfolds its energies through a mutually supportive communal reading.
This workshop will concentrate on “The Ondt and the Gracehoper” fable, Finnegans Wake, Book III, Chapter I, 414.14-419.10, and uncover its originality and complexity. The workshop will be moderated by Professor Vicki Mahaffey (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Professor Derek Attridge (University of York) and by Professor Anne Fogarty (UCD), Dr Luca Crispi (UCD), and Dr Sam Slote (Trinity College Dublin).
Paul O'Hanrahan (Balloonatics Theatre Company) will be the guest performer.
