The Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital is a major teaching facility of The Medical School, University College Dublin. In cooperation with its counterpart at St. Vincent's Hospital, the Department spearheads the teaching programmes of clinical medicine for students in their penultimate and final years of the medical school curriculum, and plays a leadership role in postgraduate medical education at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital. The Department operates laboratory-based and clinical research programmes, and participates in the clinical care of patients admitted to the Mater Hospital which is a 540 bed tertiary centre. In collaboration with the Centre for Medical Education at Earlsfort Terrace, the Department is involved with curriculum design and reform and the development of computer-assisted learning facilities. The research programme at the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics focuses on molecular mechanisms of inflammation, hypersensitivity and ischaemia-reperfusion injury with particular emphasis on vascular pathobiology.
