Clinical Primer Scheme

Overview of the Scheme

Overview of the Scheme

Nationally and within UCD, there is an urgent need for more healthcare professionals to enable translation. This deficiency is even more acute in veterinary medicine, for which UCD has the only School on the island of Ireland. The UCD-Wellcome ISSF Clinical Primer Scheme incentivised and offered support to early careers of medical and veterinary clinicians, practitioners, and individuals within the allied health services.

The Scheme was ultimately aimed at unlocking a new clinical talent pool which will be essential for underpinning the University’s future success in the priority areas of Personalised & Translational Medicine and One Health. Fostering collaboration between interdisciplinary stakeholders was key to addressing complex scientific, regulatory, societal and economic challenges related to animal and human health. The purpose of the Clinical Primer Scheme was to allow successful candidates an opportunity to work in a research environment, generating significant research outcomes that could be leveraged to pursue extramural funding. This scheme operated as a competitive funding programme intended to facilitate career development and growth, with mentorship and staff development being key features of the programme.

Meet the Awardees

10 Clincial Primer Schemes, with a total value of €379,129, were awarded to clinicians working in both human and animal medicine. The awards were designed to entice early-stage healthcare professionals into research, to support them to pursue extramural funding and to foster collaboration between interdisciplinary stakeholders.
