ACADEMIC ADVISING PILOT
Information for Students
What is Academic Advising?
Academic advising is part of the educational experience, where students are supported by faculty in making appropriate choices from a wide range of opportunities towards achieving realistic academic and professional goals.
UCD's Definition of Academic Advising
UCD is committed to the holistic development of each student to their full potential, where the development of all students is valued equally and students have a safe space in which to have developmental conversations with faculty.
Academic advisors in UCD are members of academic staff who use their insight and experience to guide students through learning-related matters or making decisions about study and career paths. This is a different role to Student Advisers who help with personal, social, financial and emotional issues and provide support when it comes to policies, procedures and services.
Benefits of Academic Advising
Your academic advisor can help you to:
- Reflect on your academic and professional goals and progress
- Navigate the decisions you need to make throughout your programme and create an academic plan
- Identify further supports if and when you need them
- Make the most of the academic, professional, and extracurricular resources and opportunities the University offers
- Deal with circumstances which are affecting your academic progress and seek the appropriate support
Objectives of Academic Advising
Schools throughout UCD have different approaches to academic advising depending on what best suits their subjects, however, for the pilot the objectives of academic advising will be as follows:
- Evaluate personal interests and abilities leading to the creation of realistic academic and professional goals.
- Develop an educational plan that leads to the timely completion of educational goals.
- Develop the critical thinking and independent decision-making skills to make and accept responsibility for academic decisions.
- Understand the most appropriate choices to make in order to achieve goals (module or major choices)
- Know what the most appropriate research opportunities are to support their educational and professional goals
- Know what the most appropriate internship, study abroad and or co and extra curricular opportunities are to support educational and professional goals.
