University College Dublin, Ireland

University College Dublin (UCD) is the project coordinator and the leader of work package 2. At UCD, a team of interdisciplinary scientists and engineers are working on the cultivation and biorefinery processing of microalgae to reach the highest biomass and omega-3 oil yields. To reach this goal, several upstream and downstream processes are being improved in both the lab-and mid-scales.

Dr. Ronald Halim

Assistant Professor

Dr. Halim has 10+ years of experience in microalgae. He completed a PhD in microalgae biofuels from Monash University in 2014. He then held postdoctoral positions in Australia, Germany and the US investigating low-energy microalgae biorefinery. He joined UCD in 2019 to study microalgal valorisation of agri-food waste streams.
As AlgaeBrew’s Project Coordinator, he is responsible for the overall implementation and delivery of the project. He also supervises AlgaeBrew PhD students based at UCD.

Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University, Turkey

Bilecik The university aims to educate students so they can produce research, knowledge, technology, social and artistic value and develop the skill to apply what they have produced to real life and in this way become individuals who can shape the future. There are various national and international projects carried out at Bilecik Seyh Edebali University. Bilecik University will lead WP5 in AlgaeBrew.

Dr. Burçin ATILGAN TÜRKMEN

Assistant Professor

Dr. Burçin is a chemical engineer and life cycle sustainability expert who has been working on implementing life cycle thinking approaches in energy and manufacturing systems for over 10 years. She has an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and a PhD. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Manchester. She is responsible for the assessing the life cycle sustainability of the microalgae animal feed and fertilizers; taking into account environmental, economic, and social implications and impacts.

Mohammed V University of Rabat, Morocco

Mohammad V University founded in 1962 is the oldest public health institute in Morocco. The University has been standing out for its high level of research activity, having international distinctions, and attracting competitive research programs at the national and international levels. As for research, the University is a national leader in terms of scientific production with three accredited research centers, three research laboratories, and about twenty research teams. Mohammad V University will contribute to WP1 and WP2 in AlgaeBrew.

Dr. AJAL EL AMINE

Assistant Professor

Dr. AJAL El Amine is a Professor-Researcher at the Pharmacognosy Department with expertise in biodiversity, natural products chemistry, food sciences and technology, and analytical chemistry applied to the evaluation of food quality and authenticity. As AlgaeBrew’s Project Principal investigator, a great deal of our research is dealing with an analysis of the nutritional composition and lipidomic characterization of raw and processed materials from brewer’s spent grain and wastewater.

University of Camerino, Italy

University of Camerino (UNICAM) is a ‘City Campus University’ chartered in 1336 and one of the most ancient and dynamic universities in Italy located in the "hearth" of the central  (Umbria-Marche) Apennines mountain ranges. The university has 4 campuses (Camerino, Ascoli Piceno, Matelica, San Benedetto del Tronto), and 5 academic Schools in Architecture and Design, Biosciences and Veterinary Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology.  UNICAM is the national contact point for the Italian Euraxess portal for the mobility of researchers and one of the four Italian Universities to obtain the prestigious European acknowledgment “HR excellence in research”. UNICAM boasts of building structures and equipment in continual development: teaching and scientific libraries and a large number of research laboratories, student services, and facilities. The University of Camerino acts as WP4 leader in AlgaeBrew.

Dr. Antonietta La Terza

Associate Professor

Antonietta has a long-lasting experience in soil microbiology with particular reference to protists. She obtained her PhD in Protistology from Pisa University. She is an Associate Professor of Zoology at University of Camerino (Italy), where she leads the Soil Biology Lab. Research interests include Soil Biomonitoring and Soil Microbiome Analysis. She is the team leader of WP4 which will evaluate the effect of microalgae biomass residue-based fertilizers on plant health and its microbiome.

National School of Agriculture in Meknes, Morocco

The Moroccan School of Agriculture (National School of Agriculture in Meknes (ENA) founded in 1942 is the oldest agronomic and food sciences higher education institution in Morocco. Since its founding, it has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of Moroccan agriculture and agro-food sector through training future agricultural engineers with specific skills and knowledge in diverse areas of modern agriculture and food sciences: environmental science, agricultural engineering, food processing engineering, food by-products valorisation, agribusiness and marketing, and rural development engineering.

Dr. Aadil Bajoub

Assistant Professor

Aadil received his PhD from Granada, Spain. His current research focuses on the nutritional healthiness of vegetable-based food and the recovery and valorisation of food by-products targeting their circular management by considering their richness in bioactive compounds. His academic skills are of great importance to the AlgaeBrew for developing and optimizing methods for the analysis of brewery spent grain and wastewater composition and lipidomic characterization of raw and processed materials.

Dr. Alla Silkina

Research Officer

Dr. Alla Silkina is an algal biotechnologist with 20 years of international experience. She has worked in the UK, France, Malaysia, and Ukraine. Her main expertise is in academic business interaction related to algal biotechnology, mass-scale algal cultivation and physiology, biofouling, pigments, and product development from algal biomass. In AlgaeBrew, Alla is leading WP1, with the aim of using microalgae to bioremediate brewery waste streams, and will participate in other project activities.

LSAqua is a young company that is developing sustainable alternatives to replace fishmeal from aquafeed diets by blending protein sources such as Single Cell Proteins, Processed Animal proteins, or vegetable proteins, where often the formula is adapted to customers’ needs. LSAqua pursues innovative and sustainable solutions with a clear commitment to social responsibility and safety.  LSAqua is AlgaeBrew’s WP3 leader.

Mr. Danny Van Mullem

Chief Executive Officer

Mr.Van Mullem has 40+ years of experience in the agriculture industry. He's been the CEO of Lambers Seghers since 1978 and has founded the LSAqua-division specialized in innovative feed. He has been in charge of the R&D department participating in multiple projects such as PROMIC or several Aquaexcel.
As AlgaeBrew's Project partner, Mr. Van Mullem is responsible for the coordination of the aquaculture feeding trial in WP3.
