As one of the largest agri-food industries, the brewing industry (globally valued at US$623 billion in 2020) generates substantial amounts of by-products: CO2-rich flue gas from fermentation/power-generation steps, nutrient-rich wastewater, and partially processed grain residue from malting step. AlgaeBrew is going to use state-of-the-art microalgae biotechnology to valorise brewery wastes into useful food products, thereby reducing the operational cost of waste treatment, and creating new revenue streams for breweries while decreasing their environmental impacts in a circular bioeconomy.
