AlgaeBrew

algaebrew abstract

AlgaeBrew aims to develop sustainable solutions for the valorisation of brewery by-products using microalgae. Nannochloropsis is a microalga well known for its ability to assimilate nutrient from wastewater and accumulate high levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs). The project aims to utilise nutrients from brewery by-products to support Nannochloropsis production. A biorefinery approach will then be developed for the recovery of ω-3 PUFAs as aquaculture feed, and the application of microalgae biomass residue as bio-fertiliser. The project has received generous funding from ERA-NET Susfood2 co-fund program. Coordinated by the UCD Algae Group, the project involves seven research institutions and two industrial partners from seven countries.
