Extenuating Circumstances for Open Learners

As an Open Learner, you are expected to meet the academic demands of your chosen module(s).

However, UCD acknowledges that you may experience a range of serious and unanticipated difficulties which adversely affect your ability to study, complete assessments or attend required classes and other learning activities. For situations like this, we have a policy of extenuating circumstances.

This policy applies to you if:

  • You haven’t engaged with much or any of your module over the semester due to extenuating circumstances.
  • You’ve missed an end of term essay or exam due to extenuating circumstances.

How do I apply?

If you would like to apply for extenuating circumstances, you can now do so through your SISWeb account:

  1. (opens in a new window)Log into SISWeb,
  2. Select Programme Services and then
  3. Select Applications for Extenuating Circumstances

It’s important that you outline your circumstances and its impact. It should be accompanied by supporting documentation. Your application form should be submitted before the extenuating circumstances deadline.

Before making an application, you should also make sure to read the UCD's Extenuating Circumstances Policy carefully.

When is the deadline?

The deadline for submissions is 5 working days after the last scheduled exam.

Will late applications be considered?

Late applications can only be considered in exceptional circumstances, for more information, please contact a member of the Open Learning team.

What supporting documentation do I need?

Please provide evidence to support your extenuating circumstances (example: medical certificate). You can make an appointment to go through your supporting documentation and application, by contacting the Open Learning team.
