WaterLANDS

WaterLANDS - Water-based solutions for carbon storage, people and wilderness

Europe’s wetlands are crucial for numerous plants, animals, and ecosystem services, such as water provision. With 50% of these wetlands lost in the past century, protection is essential. The EU-funded WaterLANDS project aims to restore large-scale wetland sites across Europe impacted by human activity. Beyond basic restoration, it will integrate existing knowledge on ecology, community, governance, finance, and best practices for scalable, resilient restoration. WaterLANDS will also involve local communities and stakeholders to ensure that restoration efforts provide tangible benefits for both the environment and the communities involved.
