Gamelan is the ancient classical music of Indonesia. It is an orchestra of tuned percussion instruments including hanging gongs and other metallophones, with a few softer instruments and voices as well. In this workshop you will learn to play a traditional piece of music from Java using a variety of percussion instruments, and you will learn about the history and culture of Javanese music, and about UCD's special relationship with Indonesia.
Dr. Peter Moran is the director of the UCD
Gamelan Orchestra. He has been teaching and performing Javanese
gamelan music for almost 20 years, and his original compositions for
gamelan have been performed across England, Ireland, America and Indonesia. In 2014, he founded the National Concert Hall
Gamelan Orchestra when he arranged for a complete set of Indonesian
gamelan instruments to be given to the Irish people as a gift from His Royal Highness Sultan Hamengkubuwono X of Yogyakarta, Java.
