UCD School of Archaeology is sad to record the death of Professor Emeritus Michael Herity
It is with regret that we learnt of the death of our retired colleague, Professor Emeritus Michael Herity. Professor Herity died peacefully on Saturday 23 January 2016 after a short illness bravely borne. Professor Herity was a member of staff of the Department of Archaeology, University College Dublin from the 1960s to the 1990s and made a distinguished contribution to the life of the Department and his research areas; particularly the Neolithic period, early monastic sites and antiquarian studies. He also played key roles in the wider University, notably as Dean of Celtic Studies. Professor Herity served as President of the Royal Irish Academy, President of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland and editor of the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland. He was the author of numerous academic papers and books including Irish Passage Graves (1974) and with Professor George Eogan Ireland in Prehistory (1977). In recent years he has been engaged in a project to publish the Ordnance Survey Letters by county, with 17 volumes published to date. We would like to extend the sympathy and condolences of the School of Archaeology to his wife Berna and family.
