Biographical History

Born Castlewellan, County Down, he qualified as a solicitor and was Irish Party MP for South Down, 1886–1901, when he resigned his seat.

Damp press copy letter book containing accounts of the solicitors’ firm of Clarke & McCartan, Belfast, and c.300 copy letters from Michael McCartan Irish Parliamentary Party MP for South Down to Timothy Harrington, J.F. Small, Joseph Biggar, Charles S. Parnell, John Dillon, Timothy Michael Healy and John Morley among others, relating to electoral and constituency matters and to the political interests of the Irish Parliamentary Party.
