Eileen Kane Art History Travel Fund
UCD School of Art History and Cultural Policy is delighted to announce the institution of the Eileen Kane Art History Travel Fund. This fund, administered at School level, has been set up to alleviate costs borne by Art History students on group field trips organised and supervised by the School outside of the Republic of Ireland. The first beneficiaries of this fund will be those students registered to the third-year field trip module AH30240 Berlin: Museum Studies, coordinated by Prof Kathleen-James Chakraborty in Spring 2024.
The fund has been named in honour of one of the School’s most venerable ex-staff members, Dr Eileen Kane. Her association with the School dates back to its foundation in the 1960s. She was the first student to complete a doctoral thesis in the History of European Painting under the direction of Françoise Henry. Her research and publishing interests have focussed on late medieval art in Avignon and Rome, religious art in nineteenth-century Dublin, and Christian art more widely. Throughout her time as a lecturer and researcher, and Director of the Purser-Griffith Diploma, from 1967–2000, Dr Kane made an enormously important contribution to the scholarly and social life of the School. She was a particularly keen supporter and contributor to teaching and study events off campus, including foreign field trips and other activities which helped to inspire our students to study important works of art at first-hand in foreign collections or in situ in their original context.
As an appreciation of the enduring impact that Dr Kane has left on UCD School of Art History & Cultural Policy, and its ethos, we are proud to name this fund in her honour.
