Research: Susan’s MA thesis examined Dublin through the Visual and Material Culture of flower selling which included the development of a professional flower trade in the city. This prompted her current PhD research which considers a broader range of street trading during the long nineteenth century. By exploring poverty and welfare through the lens of female street traders it is the aim of this research to expand upon the corpus of studies already undertaken on women during this time frame, using visual and material culture as primary sources. By considering a layered approach to economy, through both the investigation of female traders and the types of visual media used to represent them, it is hoped that a new understanding of core themes including class, gender and identity may become further elucidated through the image, not just as an auxiliary reference, but as a main method of examining poverty, welfare, women and Dublin, as part of a wider contextual study. Susan’s project is funded by a UCD Advance Fellowship (2019-2023) and she is a resident scholar at the Humanities Institute, UCD. |
