The University’s Responsibilities
The University, retains responsibility for the academic oversight for students who are undertaking internships, work experience placement or experiential learning with host partners. Some governance functions may be delegated to the relevant Governing Board with oversight for a student or groups of students. The University and relevant Governing Board will be responsible for upholding best practice in relation to the Policy on (opens in a new window)Internships/Work Practice Experience: Guidelines and Good Practice.
The scope of responsibilities retained by the University can be broadly categorised across the following functions:
- Academic oversight and module design to include the development of the module descriptor, identification of learning outcomes and associated mechanisms of assessment.
- Identification and provision of suitable internships, and the vetting of the suitability of self-sourced student internships.
- Orientation of students in advance of the commencement of the internship. This will include ensuring students: complete all necessary paperwork (Student Internship Acceptance form); are aware of any codes of practice and/or regulations; are aware of their obligations under the UCD Student Code. The Programme will arrange preparatory training and workshops for students.
- Coordination of the completion of signed agreements between the University and internship hosts. This will also include a liaison function with hosts, to ensure that internship hosts understand all aspects of the process.
- Coordination of key academic related activities to include the assignment of academic supervisors, coordination of host site visits, and assessment of the learning outcomes.
