Professor John McCafferty appointed Chair of the Irish Manuscripts Commission
Congratulations to Professor John McCafferty, UCD School of History and Academic Curator of the UCD Cultural Heritage Collection, on his recent appointment as Chair of the Irish Manuscripts Commission.
The Irish Manuscripts Commission was founded in 1928 to preserve in print and online primary sources – in public and private ownership – for Irish history and culture through the publication of editions, calendars and lists. Since 1930 the Commission has published over 200 volumes and 47 volumes of its serial publication Analecta Hibernica. Its involvement in publishing hitherto little-known material from the 1916 Rising in 2016 is the latest example of its public service remit, in providing the primary sources – the first drafts of history – for as wide an audience as possible. The first Chair of the Commission was Professor Eoin MacNeill, nationalist leader and Professor at UCD, whose memoirs were published by the IMC last year.
In addition to Professor McCafferty being appointed as Chair of the Commission, two of our colleagues within UCD - Associate Professor Elva Johnston, UCD School of History, and Ms Kate Manning, Principal Archivist, UCD Library – are also acting as members of the Commission.
