SPINARIA at UCD Classical Museum, 30th January - 13th March

Inspired by Spinario, one of the most iconic statues to survive from Antiquity, Zsuzsanna Ardó’s SPINARIA is a visually captivating art installation exhibited for the first time in Ireland at UCD Classical Museum.

The exhibition re-imagines the ancient youth transformed into a contemplative mature modern. This metamorphosis takes material form with marble exchanged for diaphanous paper, static Hellenic sculpture transformed into modern kinetic art.

The exhibition runs 30th January - 13th March 2025. During the exhibition, there will two concerts featuring poems by the artist set to music by Irish composers.  The first concert will mark the opening of the Spinaria exhibition on 30th January; a cantando performed in the museum, followed by an event in Trapdoor on 31st January.

The UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics and Trapdoor @ UCD were delighted to showcase Signifier, Signified, a world première workshop performance of excerpts from a new choral composition.

This new choral composition by Irish composer Prof. Gráinne Mulvey (TUD), inspired by a poem centred on Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure, which was composed by  award-winning visual artist and writer Zsuzsanna Ardó.  This collaborative creation was performed by the renowned Dublin-based choir The Mornington Singers under conductor Dr Orla Flanagan (TCD).

The event began with a discussion chaired by Associate Prof. Síofra Pierse, Head of UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics and Associate Professor in French and Francophone Studies, centered on the collaborative creative process from poem through composition to performance, with Zsusanna, Gráinne and Orla & Prof Bettina Migge on the panel.

Zsuzsanna Ardó is an Adjunct Lecturer at UCD School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics.
