Aifric Ní Chléirigh Outside UCD I cannot stop thinking about the six wonderful lives lost last week in Berkeley. I work and live in the South Dublin area and it is devastating to think that something like this can happen so close to home. I also have two younger siblings who are both currently experiencing the joys of university. Although my family did not know them personally, we were shocked when we realised that Eimear Walsh and her family live just around the corner from us in Foxrock. As a young woman in her late twenties who travelled abroad on Erasmus during college and is about to go travel abroad for work again this news hits very close to home and reinforces for me the fragility of life. I spent many a night during my Erasmus days drinking and partying on apartment balconies, enjoying life and being young. Eimear, Olivia, Ashley, Lorcan, Eoghan and Niccolai our country will never forget you. Your families aswell as your injured friends, Clodagh, Aoife, Hannah, Jack, Niall, Conor and Sean are always in our thoughts and good wishes. Ar dheis Dé go raibh bhur anamneacha dílse.

Conor Dooley Outside UCD The terrible tragedy has profoundly touched me and countless other unconnected people in ways that I find difficult to express.  I did my J1 in 1978 - the photos and memories are still with me.  My two eldest daughters - one at UCD - have just done J1s.  My two younger daughters will, with luck, do theirs soon.

What happened to those fine young people last week was so immediate, even though so distant in miles, and utterly shocking and unfair.  My sincere condolences to all the families so deeply affected.  May those who survived be blessed in their future prospects and may they make the fullest recoveries possible.
Denise McDonnell UCD Staff My heart goes out to everyone who has been touched by the six young students who were tradigically killed in Berkeley last week. As a mother and a UCD staff member since 1979, I cannot begin to feel the heartache that all the students, parents, siblings other relatives and their piers. I have to admire our young Irish people, at how they have pulled together and how respectful they have been to these six students who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. As my son told me the day after this awful tradegy that it could have been him or any of his friends. RIP
Helen Buggle UCD Graduate At such a loss there are no words to express the pain and sadness. it is the ones left behind that need to be brave when they feel so vulnerable and exposed in all their human weakness and yet it is the human sprit, the inner strength that propels us on to continue living and etching out a new way to be in the world a new way to look at life it is in the passing of the young that we learn the most. It is with their life not yet spent that we must honour them by our deeds. My thoughts are with the families and friends.

Maura Allen Outside UCD As an Irish woman from Blackrock, Dublin, now living in Berkeley, California, and with children near the ages of your students who lost their lives here, I have shared in your disbelief and grief from the time my phone rang early Tuesday morning with the news from Ireland.

That your dearly beloved children, brothers, sisters, friends, (some known to my family in Ireland, and sorely missed), at the very beginning of their independent and aspirational lives, should come to their end in the city I live in has forever changed this place I call home.

I will never again drive by 2020 Kittredge, (a half block away from Berkeley High School where one of my daughters attends school) without thinking of Lorcan Miller, Niccolai Schuster, Eoghan Culligan, Olivia Burke, Ashley Donohoe, and Eimear Walsh - whose names and faces are now firmly etched in my mind.

I have stood alongside some of you at the vigils in Berkeley, the San Francisco mass at St Mary's Cathedral, and also at the Berkeley memorial on 2020 Kittredge where I return to daily. People, flowers, and cards still arrive here as we all try to grapple with the enormity of this tragedy.

No words can express my heart-felt sorrow to the parents and families affected by the loss of their loved ones. Please know that you are in our thoughts daily, and that we grieve with you. I hope and pray that you will be carried in strength through the times ahead. My thoughts and prayers, as well as those of the many of us here in Berkeley are with you.  Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.
