7-Week Pre-Sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Teacher

Reports to

Pre-Sessional EAP Programme Coordinator

Position Summary

The UCD Centre for English and Global Language (CEGL) is primarily a teaching and resource centre which provides language modules and programmes to students across the university and externally. It has a university-wide remit to provide teaching, self-study, testing, and advisory services across UCD and internationally.

Currently, the Centre supports the delivery of global language modules for over 2,000 students and provides English language modules and programmes for up to 800 international students.

Reporting to the Pre-Sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Programme Coordinator, the 7-Week Pre-Sessional EAP Teacher will ensure the delivery of a highly flexible, responsive and effective language teaching to students. The main function of the Pre-Sessional EAP Teacher is to undertake contact teaching, teaching-related, assessment, and administrative duties associated with the nominated summer Pre-Sessional EAP Programme.

The post holder will also be required to foster collaborative working relationships with all colleagues in a professional and approachable manner and have experience working with students from diverse educational, cultural and work backgrounds. The postholder is expected to display a motivated and committed approach to teaching, assessment, and student support in line with Centre guidelines.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning:

●       Deliver classes to Pre-Sessional EAP students for 20 contact hours per week (in person or online as required);

●       Teach largely prepared materials, supplement lesson material and share best practice with colleagues to promote the development of curriculum practices;

●       Set and mark homework as per course guidelines;

●       Guide students’ independent study;

●       Participate in and contribute to weekly course meetings and staff development sessions;

●       Facilitate individual and group tutorials and hold meetings with students and provide formative feedback and support in response to their needs;

●       Participate in induction meetings and examination board meetings;

●       Participate in teaching observations and post-observation feedback sessions.

Testing and Assessment

●       Conduct placement tests and regular formative and summative assessments during the course, and administer resits (if required);

●       Engage with standardisation, moderation and grade review processes, mark and provide constructive feedback on student coursework, examination papers, etc. and submit provisional grades in a timely manner.

Administration Skills:

●       Undertake day to day administration duties associated with the nominated Pre-Sessional EAP programme (e.g. to keep accurate records of students' attendance and performance);

●       Attend all teacher meetings and exam board meetings associated with modules taught;

●       Provide regular updates and reports on students’ progress, as requested by the Pre-Sessional EAP Programme Coordinator; 

Engagement:

●       Work collaboratively with CEGL teaching and administrative staff;

●       Work with and respond sensitively and appropriately to the needs of students from diverse educational, cultural, and work backgrounds.

Student Support and Welfare

●       Proactively ensure that student issues are identified and directed to the Pre-Sessional EAP Programme Coordinator and relevant members within the Centre;

●       Ensure that students have a positive, professional, and welcoming experience around all aspects of their course.

 Other Activities:

●       Prepare end-of-programme reports as required;

●       Fulfil additional duties as assigned by the Pre-Sessional EAP Programme Coordinator.

Selection Criteria 

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful  candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.  Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory

●       An undergraduate degree;

●       A relevant teaching qualification (e.g. Cambridge CELTA/Cambridge DELTA/Trinity CertTESOL/ Trinity DipTESOL);

●       A postgraduate degree preferably in Applied Linguistics/TESOL/EAP or other relevant area;

●       A strong, demonstrable commitment to high-quality teaching;

●       Proven experience of language testing and assessment;

●       Proven experience of working with students from diverse educational, cultural, and work  backgrounds;

●       Demonstrable and up-to-date learning technology skills; familiarity with a range of IT software and virtual teaching and learning environments;

●       Ability to manage time and workload to meet administrative and marking deadlines;

Desirable

●       Experience of teaching on university-based EAP courses, preferably on Pre-Sessional courses;

●       Experience of assessing EAP students at a range of levels in higher education contexts;

●       Familiarity with BALEAP Competency Framework for Teachers of EAP;

●       Knowledge and understanding of current higher education learning and teaching context.

●       Basic understanding of Generative AI tools and willingness to implement their application in EAP.

Position Summary
