EDI Coffee mornings and get togethers
The School's EDI Committee organises Coffee mornings once a month. All students and staff are welcomed to join in for a cuppa and chat. The first coffee morning of the 202425 academic year was held in September.
SCBE staff and research students join together to celebrate events that take place in the school. In addition to summer and Christmas get togethers, the school also likes to celebrate retirements and other significant events that take place in people's lives.
Stage 2 and 3 gatherings
Each year early in the autumn trimester, the school arranges a coffee or a lunch for stage 2 and 3 students providing returning students an opportunity to reconnect after the summer break. It aims to create a welcoming space for students to meet and chat with academic staff in a relaxed setting, ask questions about their studies, research opportunities, and career aspirations.
In 2024, the event was held on 1st and 2nd October.
These events are part of the College's Athena Swan Bronze action plan, aimed at creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students and contributing to positive change in the School and College.
Social Tennis
The UCD Staff and Postgraduate tennis club in UCD has a number of active staff and students from the school. The club night is Wednesday and the annual fee is €50. If you would like to find out more, please contact Sarah at (opens in a new window)sarah.cannon@ucd.ie
Promoting Women in Engineering
The School, with the support of the EDI group of the UCD College of Engineering and Architecture, celebrated International Women's Day in Engineering 2023 with an event showcasing career pathways of women in engineering and their contributions to the field. The event was open to female PhD students and took place in June 2023.
Outreach Events
The students and staff actively take part in outreach events outside of the University. They have taken part in events such as (opens in a new window)Soapbox Science, (opens in a new window)Pint of Science and the (opens in a new window)ESB Science Blast.
