Industrial visit to Irish Cement
Friday, 22 November, 2024
Friday the 22nd of November marked the second annual industrial site visit for the
SCBE third year undergraduate programme. This year the school visited Irish Cement, a member of the CRH international group based out of Platin, Co. Louth.
The group enjoyed a presentation on the step-by-step manufacturing process,
alongside the current challenges, opportunities and recent innovations across the
heavy process industry. They were then given a tour with additional discussion of the on-site limestone quarry, the conditions required for clinker production within the kilns, and an overview of the central control room and analytical tools in use to
ensure consistent production.
Student Testimonial:
Irish Cement was an incredible experience! I loved being able to see what other
opportunities chemical engineers have outside of the pharmaceutical industry.
Seeing how the different concepts we study in our modules are relevant to real-world
situations is really motivating and helps me appreciate the material even more.

The SCBE EDI committee would like to Matthew Mc Kenna, and all those at Irish
cement for taking the time to give us a very informative site tour.
