100,000 Downloads of Civil Engineering Papers from UCD repository

Friday, 26 August, 2016

The School of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering is this year celebrating 100,000 downloads of their publications from Research Repository UCD. The collection has been going from strength to strength, with the number of downloads more than doubling each year since the School started uploading papers in 2010. The figure shows top downloads per country in the first 10 months of 2013.

Online repositories are becoming more and more popular and are increasingly being mandated by research funding agencies (e.g. SFI, IRC). Research Repository UCD puts the final peer-reviewed draft versions of publications online – mostly journal articles –and makes them available for free download via search engines such as Google Scholar. UCD Library manages the repository and liaises with publishers to ensure no breach of copyright.

The Civil Engineering collection now holds 372 publications and they are being downloaded all over the world. In the first 10 months of 2013 alone, Civil Engineering papers were downloaded in the United States 25,000 times. The emerging market countries feature strongly – there were almost 5,000 downloads in China this year and 3,400 in India.  The range of countries showing interest in the collection is as impressive as the numbers – papers were downloaded from a total of 162 countries, including such distant places as Belize, the Seychelles, Burkina Faso, Bhutan, Mongolia and Swaziland.
