Civil Engineering Staff Member Appointed to Steering Group for rx3

The Department of Environment, Community and Local Government has recently endorsed the appointment of Dr. William Magette, a senior lecturer in the School of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, as the Higher Education representative on the Steering Group for rx3, a major initiative to improve solid waste management and recycling in Ireland. Magette was chosen in recognition of his long-term contributions to research and teaching in the area of waste management.

With a mantra to “rethink, recycle, and remake” in respect of solid waste, the rx3 project is a market development programme for waste resources designed to:

  • promotestable demand for recovered waste materials;
  • support the achievement of economies of scale in the production of products made from recycled materials; and,
  • support more recycling / reprocessing infrastructure in Ireland to reduce reliance on overseas markets.

As such the rx3 project is a significant component of Ireland’s framework for sustainable development.
