Dr Amiya Pandit wins the Thomas Mitchell medal of excellence
Wednesday, 7 December, 2022
Dr Amiya Pandit, Post-Doctoral researcher in the UCD School of Civil Engineering was awarded the Thomas Mitchell medal of excellence. The Thomas Mitchell medal is awarded to the top ranked postdoctoral scholar in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics category in the Government of Ireland Irish Research Council funding scheme, marking outstanding achievement.
Dr Amiya Pandit is working under the direction of Dr Abdollah Malekjafarian in the School of Civil Engineering. Dr Pandit’s work aims to employ low-cost hybrid dampers in order to minimise the threat of excessive vibration in offshore wind turbines, resulting in extending the life of these structures. Offshore wind turbines are the tallest rotating structures used to harvest wind energy and can produce clean green energy. However, installation and maintenance of these slender structures in harsh ocean environments is very challenging. There is enough evidence about how the excessive vibrations affect the stability and serviceability of these wind turbines. For the healthy functioning of the wind turbines, vibration calming equipment is crucial.
