UCD Computer Science Researchers Receive ReCLAIM Award for GenAI Project

On the afternoon of Tuesday, 17th September, the UCD Research Culture Funding Award Ceremony took place at the Kevin Barry Gallery in the Charles Institute. The event was opened by Prof. Grace Mulcahy, Chair of the UCD Research Culture Initiative, followed by President Orla Feely, who presented awards to nine outstanding projects (See the full list of awardees: https://www.ucd.ie/researchculture/reclaiminternalfunding/round1awardees/).

Among the recipients were researchers from our School of Computer Science: Dr. Shen Wang (PI) and Dr. Adrian Byrne (Co-PI, CeADAR) for their project titled “Responsible Use of Generative AI for Daily Research Activities”.

About the Project

As the use of Generative AI (GenAI) becomes increasingly prevalent in research to boost productivity, concerns around its impact on research integrity continue to grow. The project, “Responsible Use of GenAI for Daily Research Activities,” aims to promote the “Living Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research,” proposed by the European Commission earlier this year (Read the guidelines: (opens in a new window)https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/document/download/2b6cf7e5-36ac-41cb-aab5-0d32050143dc_en?filename=ec_rtd_ai-guidelines.pdf).

This initiative will gather feedback and adapt these guidelines to UCD’s practices through a series of workshops. The first one will be held in School of Computer Science on 27th of September. The project’s results will be disseminated through white papers, and a short course will be offered in 2025 for those unable to attend. Ultimately, this project will empower UCD researchers to use GenAI responsibly and ethically.

About ReCLAIM

The UCD Research Culture Local Actions, Initiatives, and Measures (ReCLAIM) scheme provides funding for teams exploring new ideas to foster a positive research culture at a local level, with the potential for broader impact across the university. More information about this internal funding, supported by an institutional grant from Wellcome, is available on the UCD Research Culture website (https://www.ucd.ie/researchculture/reclaiminternalfunding/). The next round of ReCLAIM Internal Funding is set to open in October 2024.
