Post-doctoral Researcher – Level 1 & 2

Applicants are invited to apply for a Post-doctoral position within VistaMilk, in the School of Computer Science at the University College Dublin, Ireland. This role will focus on using machine learning to extract insights from data generated from modern dairy farms - including data from milking equipment, sensors worn by cows, and other relevant data.

There will be a strong focus on time series data from sensors in this position. The successful candidate will need expertise developing machine-learning-based prediction models, especially using time series and/or sensor data. An interest in, or experience of, working on the application of technology to the agriculture domain would be a real plus. This individual will also have an opportunity to mentor junior researchers and to take a leadership role working with project collaborators. Experience of managing research projects would help.

Background

The VistaMilk SFI Research Centre is a unique collaboration between Agri-Food, Information Communications Technology (ICT) research institutes, leading Irish/Multinational Food, and ICT companies. It is funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine (DAFM). The centre is hosted by Teagasc, in partnership with the Tyndall National Institute, the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) at Waterford Institute of Technology, and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at University College Dublin.

Mandatory Selection Criteria

  • PhD in computer science, engineering, machine learning, or other related field
  • Experience using machine learning to extract insights from data
  • A demonstrated commitment to research and publications
  • An understanding of the operational requirements for a successful research project
  • Evidence of research activity (publication, conference presentations, awards) and future scholarly output (working papers, research proposals, and ability to outline a research project.
  • Excellent Communication Skills (Oral, Written , Presentation etc).
  • Excellent Organisational and Administrative skills including a proven ability to work to deadlines.

The PD1
The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.

The PD2

The PD2 post is intended for researchers that have completed PD1. As with the PD1, if you have already completed your PD2 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD2, or your total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 6 years, you should not apply and should refer to Research Fellow posts instead.

Salary

Salary: €37,874 - €50,030 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience
