Research Assistant

Research Assistant - Temporary 11-month post (Ideally commencing no later than 1st August 2021)

Growth in food production is not matching growth in global population – the world needs new ways of producing more food to meet this massive demand. More efficient and intensive production systems are needed, but so too is a decrease in the environmental impact of such systems. This challenge presents a huge opportunity for Ireland to position itself as a global leader in ‘data-driven’ agriculture, while also delivering a highly competitive and sustainable agri-food industry.

UCD together with Origin Enterprises Plc have established a collaborative research programme, CONSUS, focussed on the application of precision agriculture to crop production with an emphasis on optimisation of agri-food systems leading to more efficient production with lower environmental impacts. CONSUS is a collaborative programme including the Schools of Computer Science, Agriculture & Food Science, Biology & Environmental Science, Biosystems & Food Engineering and Industry Partner, Origin Enterprises.

Applications are now invited for the position of Research Assistant.

Through its research, CONSUS aims to develop data analytics techniques that will aid agronomists and farmers in the management of their crops. At this stage of the project, the data has been collected, pre-processed and ready for analysis. This role will focus on developing machine learning methods and algorithms to analyse the data and extract insight from it. While, some work has been started, this role will assist implementation of some techniques and integrating existing analyses developed within the project so far. Additionally, the role will be involved in evaluating the overall CONSUS data analytics module.
