The global sustainability agenda, spearheaded by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, offers a framework to tackle these issues head-on, but turning these aspirations into action requires commitment and tangible solutions. UCD has long been at the forefront of global sustainability work. In fact, the university played a pivotal role in the creation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thanks to the tireless advocacy of Professor Paul Walsh (SPIRe). As a representative for universities in the intergovernmental negotiations on the SDGs, Professor Walsh ensured that the voice of academia, science, and research was firmly embedded in the global sustainability agenda. UCD’s involvement in the SDGs has shaped how the world views the intersection of research and action. UCD is currently ranked number 1 in the latest QS World University Rankings for sustainability in Ireland.
As one of the few universities with special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, the university continues to influence public policy.
