About Us

The UCD Centre for Sustainable Development is a direct reflection of the university’s commitment to creating change. As UCD works toward being a net-zero institution by 2040 and cutting its carbon emissions by 51% by 2030, it is also working on the front lines to influence policy and create scalable solutions. Through interdisciplinary research, UCD addresses the global challenges of today

The world knows that Sustainable development is no longer a peripheral concern; it is the critical challenge of our time. As we grapple with the repercussions of climate change, biodiversity loss, and the socio-economic fallouts magnified by crises like COVID-19, it is clear that the road ahead, achieving long-term sustainability, requires urgent, coordinated action across all sectors of society. The global sustainability agenda, spearheaded by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, offers a framework to tackle these issues head-on, but turning these aspirations into action requires commitment and tangible solutions. Until then, the gap between aspiration and action remains vast.

At the heart of this challenge is academia's responsibility to drive innovation, research, and policy that will not merely understand, but also solve the problems of today and tomorrow. Universities have a crucial role to play in this effort.

UCD has long been at the forefront of global sustainability work. In fact, the university played a pivotal role in the creation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thanks to the tireless advocacy of Professor Paul Walsh (SPIRe). As a representative for universities in the intergovernmental negotiations on the SDGs, Professor Walsh ensured that the voice of academia, science, and research was firmly embedded in the global sustainability agenda. UCD’s involvement in the SDGs has shaped how the world views the intersection of research and action. UCD is currently ranked number 1 in the latest QS World University Rankings for sustainability in Ireland.

As one of the few universities with special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, the university continues to influence public policy. It contributes research-driven insights that are directly influencing the future of sustainable development worldwide, ensuring that the university’s work doesn’t just sit on a shelf but actually makes a difference in shaping policies that will affect generations to come. UCD is shaping the future of sustainability in higher education, with a robust, structured program that embeds the UN SDGs into every aspect of the university's education, research, and community engagement.

What makes the Centre so vital today is the ongoing need for institutions like ours to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world solutions. It is about ensuring that knowledge results in real-world change—through evidence-based policy, through industry collaboration, and through cultivating a new generation of leaders who understand that sustainability is fundamental to every aspect of human development.

The need for robust action is clearer than ever. The challenges are daunting, but the capacity to address them is within reach. The need for real action is now more urgent than ever. Through our continued focus on research excellence, innovation, and education, UCD is leading the way in creating solutions that matter. We are focused not only on producing knowledge but on making a measurable impact in the fight for a sustainable future.
