The world’s largest professional organisation for electronic and electrical engineering, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), has elevated Professor Anding Zhu to the rank of Fellow.
The highest level of membership awarded by the organisation, the title of IEEE Fellow is reserved for those with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in the association's areas of interests.
With over 400,000 members across 160 countries, the IEEE is regarded as a world leading authority on a wide variety of fields including, aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications, biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.
The IEEE elevated Professor Zhu to the Fellow grade in recognition of his contributions to behavioural modelling and digital predistortion of RF power amplifiers, following a rigorous evaluation carried out by the IEEE Fellow Committee.
“I am thrilled and truly honoured to join this prestigious group of professionals. Being named as an IEEE Fellow is a big milestone of my career,” said the researcher from the UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
A prestigious honour and an important career achievement among the technical community, the total number of Fellows elevated in any one year by the IEEE cannot exceed 0.1% of its voting membership.
UCD VP for Research, Innovation and Impact, Professor Orla Feely, who is also an IEEE Fellow, said: “I am delighted to congratulate Anding Zhu on this achievement, which reflects his international leadership in the area of RF power amplifiers, circuits of central importance to current and future communication systems.
"Another person who would be enormously proud today is the late Professor Tom Brazil, also an IEEE Fellow and a mentor to Anding and myself. In his role as Head of the UCD RF and Microwave Research Group, which was founded by Tom, Anding is building on Tom’s legacy and taking it to new levels of success.”
In addition to his leadership of the UCD RF & Microwave Research Group, Professor Zhu is a Principal Investigator in the SFI Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications – CONNECT.
Professor Zhu’s research interests include high-frequency nonlinear system modelling and device characterisation techniques with a particular emphasis on behavioural modelling and digital linearisation for RF power amplifiers for wireless communications.
His current research focuses on developing digitally-linearized energy-efficient RF and mm-wave wireless transmitter front-end circuits and systems for future wireless communications.
He has published over 170 peer-reviewed papers, and has received research funding from various sources including Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), European Space Agency (ESA), Enterprise Ireland (EI) and industry donations.
