Artist in Residence 2020/2021

Published: Thursday, 17 September, 2020

The Earth Institute is delighted to announce that Mark Clare has joined the Institute this week as artist in residence, in partnership with Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and UCD Parity Studios. Parity Studios, the UCD artist in residence programme, strives to encourage creative relationships between artists, academics, and researchers, enabling new perspectives on current and prospective research to arise through the lens of artistic practice.

Mark obtained a BA Fine Art Sculpture from St. Martins College of Art & Design in London, followed by an MA in Fine Art from the University of Ulster. His most recent solo exhibitions include: The Little Things Matter - Pro Arts, Oakland USA 2019; If Not You - Sirius Arts Centre, 2017; Que sais-je? - Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris, 2015.

Mark is particularly interested in the potential of art to act as a tool for opening up dialogue and highlighting possibilities and alternative perspectives - allowing us to ask questions of ourselves, our place within our community and the broader environment, with his recent work examining the extent to which human activities have had a significant impact on the Earth’s ecosystems. Through this residency, Mark will explore the decline of insect populations and impacts on local biodiversity.

We're thrilled that Mark has joined us and are looking forward to integrating him into the Institute community over the coming months and introducing him to relevant groups and courses. On October 8th, Mark will speak at the Institute’s weekly coffee morning, introducing his work and plans for the residency.
