Coffee Morning: Craig Bullock

A Financial Needs Assessment for Biodiversity

Dr. Craig Bullock (School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy) introudces a new project, "A Financial Needs Assessment for Biodiversity". Funded by the Irish Research Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the project aims to determine how much investment we need to meet the targets of Ireland National Biodiversity Action Plan. Biodiversity in Ireland is under severe pressure, as it is elsewhere, from habitat loss and degradation, land use change, pollution and persecution. 91% of protected habitat types are inadequate condition with 41% being of 'bad' status. The project will also be looking at the potential sources of funding, including private finance. It builds on the National Biodiversity Expenditure Review undertaken in 2018 which estimated national spending at €1.5bn over a 6 year period between 2010-2015, with environmental payments in the agricultural sector accounting for 75% of this spending.
