Abstract:

Through detailed seismic interpretation and fault analysis this project seeks to improve the understanding of the structural evolution of Celtic Sea Basins including North Celtic Sea Basin (NCSB), South Celtic Sea Basin (SCSB), Fastnet Basin (FB) and Mizen Basin (MB). Relevant topics of research will be the control of inherited structures on basin morphology, evolution and reactivation during the extension and inversion, and the spatial and temporal interactions between faults and between basins. The results will focus on better understanding a) the basin evolution during the Mesozoic (Triassic to Early Cretaceous rifting stages) taking into account faults and depocentres distribution, b) the Cenozoic inversion and the effect of the pre-existing faults and basin structure in the styles of inversion, c) the origin of the Cenozoic extensional fault system affecting the inversion structures. All of these results will be integrated within a comprehensive model focused on understanding the petroleum system in Celtic Sea Basins with special attention in trap formation, potential hydrocarbon charge, leakage and seal integrity.
