Tom Brazil
It is with great sorrow that I must inform you that (opens in a new window)MTT-SPresident Tom Brazil passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 13th. Funeral services will be held on April 20th in Dublin, Ireland. Let us remember him as a great mentor, an excellent leader, a gentle soul, and a friend.
The Memorials Committee is planning to recognize Tom and his contributions to the Society at IMS 2018.

Thomas J. ("Tom") Brazil held the Chair of Electronic Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD) where he was also Head of Electronic Engineering in the UCD School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. He received his PhD from the National University of Ireland in 1977. Professor Brazil was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 2003 and elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) in 2004. He served as Secretary of the RIA between March 2009 and March 2013 and was a Member of the RIA Council. He was IEEE MTT-S Worldwide Distinguished Lecturer in Microwave CAD 1999-2003 and was appointed to the Senate of the National University of Ireland in 2012. He acted as Chair of the European Microwave Conference in the UK in 2006 and was Chair of the European Microwave Integrated Circuits Conference held in London in 2016. Following election by world-wide ballot in August 2010, he became a serving member of Administrative Committee of the IEEE Microwave Theory & Techniques Society (MTT-S) and in October 2016 Professor Brazil was elected President of the MTT-Society in 2018. He was serving as President-Elect of the MTT-Society in 2017.

He would be able to summarize a few abstract equations that described some semiconductor physics, and be able to demonstrate their vital importance. He would translate to us how those equations over the past half century have given us all the marvel of technological advances we see today. That is powerful. And nothing short of inspirational for a 20 something kid. Its no surprise then that Prof. Brazil was a large influence on me doing an Electronic masters, before going on to enter the semiconductor industry where i have been for the past 2 years. Hugh J Finlay | Yesterday, April 18th, I learned with regret that my former colleague Prof Tom Brazil had passed away on April 13th. Tom and I were coworkers at the Plessey Research facility in England, before I moved to live in California. Tom was a great individual, very gifted and personable. Over the years, I met him a few times at IEEE conferences in the USA as we reviewed our common Microwave Technology. I always found him to be a gentleman, a great example to all of us. Professor Tom has left us a great legacy in his contributions to CAD and Microwave Techniques. He has been a great leader within the IEEE and other organizations and took part in many publications and conferences. I have fond memories of Tom and he will certainly be missed by his family and our engineering profession. Please pass on my condolences to his family in Dublin, Ireland.
