The two-year Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering is taught by faculty with active interdisciplinary research programs, working with national and international networks of industrial and clinical collaborators across a range of areas within Biomedical Engineering. As part of the master’s degree you will have the opportunity to spend 6-8 months on an internship gaining valuable work experience with medical device companies working within the European medical device regulatory environment. Companies in which ME Biomedical Engineering students are placed on internship include Medtronic, Pfizer, Novartis, Abbott, Stryker, Boston Scientific, De Puy Synthes.
This masters is professionally accredited by Engineers Ireland and recognised by the Washington Accord for Chartered Engineer status of which ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) is a signatory.
UCD is highly attractive to students due to the exposure to world leading
researchers and the significant career prospects.
When studying on this programme you will work with faculty and researchers at UCD working on new areas of biomedical engineering research. The ME degree programme includes subjects such as rehabilitation engineering, neural engineering, biomechanics, medical device design, biomaterials, cell culture tissue engineering, experimental methods and statistics. You will also have the opportunity to choose from a range of modules in physiology and anatomy alongside advanced engineering topics including advanced signal processing, nanomaterials and dynamics.
Students develop a knowledge of how the medical device industry is regulated and how new products are introduced to the market, drawing from experience within UCD which includes medtech spin-out companies such as BiancaMed and Latch Medical. Upon graduation from the Biomedical Engineering Masters degree at UCD you will have the qualification and experience to kick start a career in the medtech industry or to pursue PhD research in biomedical engineering.
Entrants to the programme must hold an honours undergraduate degree (NFQ level 8) with a minimum upper second class honours or international equivalence in a Mechanical, Electronic, Electrical, Mechatronic, Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering programme is required. Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0 in each element), or equivalent.
93% of our graduate move into employment or further studies within the first 6 months. Our students are employed across a wide range of industries and companies and the below is just a small sample of those: Accenture, Deloitte, Medtronic, Pfizer, Novartis, Abbott, Stryker, Boston Scientific, De Puy Syntheses.
