what will i study?

The Programme's teaching methods are highly interactive and varied. Students participate in lectures, workshops, tutorials and practical exercises.

The course content addresses the principle scientific and engineering challenges involved in the design, operation and management of biopharmaceutical production facilities. Case-studies of US and UK biotech firms, described by senior company executives, are used to illustrate the possibilities and limitations of commercial exploitation of scientific discoveries.

The programme consists of 12 modules with core modules in Biopharmaceutical Engineering, option engineering modules for Science graduates and option biology modules for Engineering graduates and a research project. Overall, 90 ‘credits’ must be achieved to complete the programme: each of the 12 modules account for 5 ‘credits’ each, and the project accounts for 30 ‘credits’.

CLASS TIMES:

Classes take place every Friday afternoon (during UCD term time) between 14.00 - 18.00 at the NIBRT facility, Belfield Campus, UCD.

What past graduates have to say:
John Meehan
“An Undergraduate Degree in Medicinal Chemistry meant I had a detailed knowledge of how drugs interact at a cellular level. I recognised that I wanted to know more about the Biopharmaceutical Industry and this Masters course provided me with that knowledge; it bridged the gap between the science behind the drug and the manufacturing process.
The modules I studied such as lean six sigma, regulatory affairs, GMP, facility design & bio-separations were a brilliant platform providing me with the means to obtain a manufacturing role within Industry. Not only was the theory taught exceptionally well but also the practical training carried out in the NIBRT facility within the UCD Campus allowed for a means of putting theory into practice and gave a great insight into the processes carried out within a typical Biopharmaceutical plant.
I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to broaden their career opportunities as well as their understanding of the industry. “

“I undertook this Masters with the intention to develop my understanding and knowledge of the field of Biopharmaceutical products including the start-up of various biologics sites within Ireland, I have found that the contents of this course are extremely relevant to the real world working environment. The modules were of great use to understanding such areas as engineering, safety and regulatory aspects that are applied on a daily basis in a biopharmaceutical company. The expertise that comes from the industry helps to really put the contents of the course into perspective and how it applies to biopharmaceutical companies in Ireland. There is a good balance of lectures and projects which helps to build on professional strengths which any company would greatly appreciate in an employee.

I recently changed to a new role of Manufacturing Science and Technology Scientist in the new biologics facility at BMS and I would not hesitate to recommend this course to anyone who has a keen interest in the Biopharmaceutical field. Engaging lectures, course content and the relevancy of the course to real world scenarios help to ensure an easier transition into a new company, a new role and the responsibilities that come with. Overall, it has been a highly rewarding experience and I have no doubts that it will serve me well throughout my career.”

“I undertook the Masters in Biopharmaceutical Engineering at UCD to build on my degree in Chemical and Biopharmaceutical Engineering and to pursue opportunities in a growing industry. The course content was substantial. It was up-to-date with both the current state of industry and cutting edge developments. I was able to complete the Masters while working full-time, as the lecture time-slots and assignments could be managed around my work/life balance. The lecturers were supportive and flexible in facilitating work commitments in terms of lectures and assignment submissions. UCD and NIBRT have a prestigious reputation in Industry, this was another reason I chose to do my Masters there. I would recommend this Masters in Engineering Degree to people who wish to develop themselves in the biopharmaceutical industry. ”
