Console-ing Passions Conference 2015
Monday, 4 July, 2016
On June 18-20, 2015, a three institution consortium of Dublin area universities (UCD, Maynooth and IADT) will be hosting the leading international conference on feminist media studies, the Console-ing Passions International Conference on Television, Video, Audio and New Media. The event will take place at The Marker Hotel and bring approximately 250 pre-eminent scholars in media and gender studies to Ireland from countries including the US, UK, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Canada, France, Spain, Israel, Qatar and Finland.
Console-ing Passions was founded in 1989 by a group of U.S. feminist media scholars and artists. At the time, research in film and media studies focused predominantly and narrowly on film and these scholars came together to organize because of a shared interest in television. Since that time, the conference has expanded to include research on new media as well, with an emphasis on race and ethnicity, globalization, national identity, and gender issues in the production and consumption of digital media. Duke University Press publishes a prestigious and longstanding series of books based on the conference itself, including Interrogating Postfeminism: Gender and the Politics of Popular Culture co-edited by Diane Negra and Yvonne Tasker. In addition to scholarship, the conference also promotes the creative work of video and new media artists who explore issues of gender and diversity.
Questions about CP can be addressed to Professor Diane Negra or Dr. Jorie Lagerwey.
