Dr Siobhan Kane, member profile:
I joined the UCD School of English, Drama & Film in 2005 as a Senior Tutor, and became Lecturer in 2017, convening courses as diverse as Children’s Literature and Creative Non-Fiction. My academic qualifications are in Law (specialising in Human Rights), and Literature, and I have long been interested in the interplay between the two. My areas of interest and research range from jurisprudence to the work of John McGahern, and in the last number of years, I have become increasingly interested in the role of non-fiction, particularly the essay, as an important and effective form through which to explore and expound complex subjects. I regularly contribute to publications such as The Irish Times, Winter Papers, and The Quietus, mainly focusing on culture, and books and music in particular, and also work as a cultural programmer. In 2008 I founded a project – Young Hearts Run Free, putting on arts events in unusual spaces, raising money for the homelessness organisation The Simon Community.
