Embracing Global Health - Sidi Bao's Journey at Universitas 21 Health Sciences Group Summer School
Sidi Bao, a student from UCD School of Medicine, embarked on a transformative journey at the (opens in a new window)Universitas 21 Health Sciences Group Summer School this summer. Hosted by Fudan University in Shanghai, the experience blended rigorous academic learning with cultural immersion, focusing on non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Universitas 21 (U21) is a global network that brings together 29 world-leading, research-intensive universities, including UCD, who share a common belief in the value of collaboration and internationalisation.
The U21 Health Sciences programme, which ran from 28 June to 9 July 2024, offered a dynamic mix of lectures, workshops, and field trips, exploring global health perspectives in depth. Reflecting on the structured programme, Sidi said: "It was such a pleasant surprise to find our daily schedules meticulously and thoughtfully organised. We had a varied timetable that balanced academic sessions with cultural and social activities."
One of the pivotal aspects for Sidi was practical exposure through field trips, which provided a deep dive into the healthcare system in Shanghai. Sidi said: "What I enjoyed the most were the field trips to various hospitals and health centres in Shanghai. They gave a comprehensive insight into the different levels of healthcare present in China. This experience encouraged me to apply for a clinical elective in Shanghai in later years."
As Sidi returns to UCD to continue her studies, she brings back not only enhanced knowledge but also a renewed vision for her future role in global health.
