Professor Tim Lynch, Vice Principal for UCD Health Affairs and Chief Academic Officer of Ireland East Hospital Group attended an event hosted by the President Michael D. Higgins and Sabina Higgins on 16th January at Áras an Uachtaráin for descendants of the Irish men and women who represented Dáil Éireann at the Treaty negotiations in London in 1921. This ceremony marked the 100th anniversary of the handover of Dublin Castle to the Provisional Irish Government led by Michael Collins. Professor Lynch’s grandfather Fionán Lynch was an active member of the Irish Volunteers. A close friend of Michael Collins and Thomas Ashe, he was instrumental in the negotiation of the treaty in 1921 ((opens in a new window)see article ‘The Castle has fallen": the transfer of power’ on rte.ie). He was the first Minister for Education in the First Dáil and later served as a District Court Judge.
