Internships

Seeking internship opportunities in libraries and information organisations for Master of Library & Information Studies (MLIS) students for summer 2025.

After a successful summer, the School of Information and Communication Studies is again seeking internship opportunities in libraries and information organisations for students on the MLIS programme during the summer of 2025.

These short internships are an important part of service learning for many of our students and allow them to gain valuable workplace experience and develop employability skills relevant to their programme. Ideally, internships involve at least 125 hours of student work, although there may be scope to negotiate this with students. These hours may be spread across days and weeks, depending on what suits the host institution and students - one example might be 25 hours per week for 4 weeks.
These generally unpaid internships focus on learning and gaining workplace skills, but our students receive academic credit for completing an internship. However, we appreciate that some host institutions may wish to put in place their own arrangements concerning payment. Internships are typically on-site, but remote arrangements are also fine, depending on circumstance and need.

Students have previously worked on specific short-term projects for their host institutions or gained experience in day-to-day library and information work. We seek internships in all types of libraries and information organisations, as our students have varied career goals and ambitions.

If your institution is in a position to offer such an opportunity, we would be very grateful if you could email us at lisinternship@ucd.ie or stefanie.havelka@ucd.ie and we will provide further information about what is involved.

If you would like information about our Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) programme, you are welcome to contact Claire McGuinness at claire.mcguiness@ucd.ie.
