About Us

The Seal Stories website is the product of a collaboration between the Irish Seal Sanctuary, the National Folklore Collection, UCD and the School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore, UCD, funded by the Irish Seal Sanctuary. The site showcases a digital map of Irish seal traditions, based primarily on archival material available in the National Folklore Collection, under the guidance of the Director and other staff in the NFC and in the School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore, UCD. The map enables the public to explore the locations of documented stories and accounts of seals, texts of the stories themselves, in both Irish and English, and information regarding the storytellers and collectors of the material. Links to further information and to publications on seals are also be provided. The primary aim of the project, among others, is to increase public understanding of the complex and historic relationship which exists between seals and the human inhabitants of the island of Ireland.
