Aran Currach, Árainn [Tomás Ó Muircheartaigh, National Folklore Collection, UCD]

An Rón

Bhí mise agus mo dhreáir a dhul síos ag an trá lá ag baint charraigín ar rabhartha mór a bhí ann agus shuigh sé síos ar an gcarraig seo, mar cheap, bhí sí chomh dubh agus d’iarr sé ormsa suí síos in aice leis uirthi.

“Tá sí chomh bog,” a deir sé.

Ach is gearr gur chorraigh sí agus rón a bhí ann agus thosa’ sé a déana’ ar a bhfarraige agus scanra’ Mícheál. Níor thug mise faoi deara é ach an oiread. Bhí dath na háite ar an rón. Bhí mé ag briseadh mo chroí ag gáirí faoi.

The Seal

Myself and my brother were going down to the beach to collect carrageen from a large flood that had occurred and he sat down on this rock, he thought it was so black and he told me to sit next to him on it.

“It’s so soft,” he said.

But it wasn’t long before the rock moved and it was a seal and it started making for the sea and Mícheál got a fright. I hadn’t noticed either. The seal was the colour of the ground. I was breaking my heart laughing about it.
