The Planet Youth study administers a lifestyle questionnaire to 15–16-year-olds in the target community.
In this instance the target community was all of the post primary schools in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.
Major topics covered in the questionnaire include substance use, peer factors, family factors, school experience, leisure activities, internet and screen use, self-reported physical and mental health, sleep, bullying.
The purpose of the study is to examine the risk and protective factors in the lives and social environment of young people and to generate the data that will inform the development of community-based interventions to address same.
Interventions developed are in the four domains of:
1. Parents and Family
2. School
3. Leisure time and local community
4. Peer group

The study was funded by the Western Region Drug and Alcohol Task Force (WRDATF), the HSE, TUSLA – Child and Family Agency, Mayo County Council, Galway County Council and Galway City Council.
Health and Wellbeing
The target group was 15-16-year-old students in their post Junior Certificate year in counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. All post-primary schools and Youthreach centres were included in the study.

Self-completion (distributed by post, email or other)
All students in their post Junior Certificate year in the 90 schools (79 mainstream post primaries, 11 Youthreach Centres) in the region were invited to participate.
A opt-out passive consent process was used, and each student and their parents received information about the survey through their schools.
5,729 students were recorded by the Department of education as having sat the junior certificate in Galway (3,418) Mayo (1,754) and Roscommon (557) in 2018.
A total of 6,002 students were identified by the schools as available to sit the survey.
30 students self-excluded from the survey across the region (20 by parents, 10 by self)
Approximately 82% of the school-identified cohort sat the survey. 18% of the identified students were unavailable on the scheduled day of the survey due to absenteeism or other commitments. An additional 2% or c120 questionnaires were excluded at the data verification process as invalid.
4,849 responses are included in the Planet Youth datasets.

Data will be disseminated on receipt of a fully completed, signed form. Incomplete or unsigned forms will be returned to the data requester for completion.
