ABOUT THE STUDY

The Planet Youth study administers a lifestyle questionnaire to 15–16-year-olds in the target community.

In this instance the target community was all of the post-primary schools, and Youthreach Centres, in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

Major topics covered in the questionnaire include substance use, peer factors, family factors, school experience, leisure activities, internet and screen use, self-reported physical and mental health, sleep, bullying, adverse life experiences.

The purpose of the study is to examine the risk and protective factors in the lives and social environment of young people and to generate the data that will inform the development of community-based interventions to address same.

Interventions developed are in the four domains of:

1. Parents and Family

2. School

3. Leisure time and local community

4. Peer group

The study was funded by the Western Region Drug and Alcohol Task Force (WRDATF), the HSE, TUSLA – Child and Family Agency, Mayo County Council, Galway County Council and Galway City Council.

Population

The target group was 15-16-year-old students in their post Junior Certificate year in counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. All 81 post-primary schools and 10 Youthreach centres were included in the study.

This cross-sectional study was first conducted in 2018 and will be repeated in 2022.

Self-completion (distributed by post, email or other) 

Response rate

All students in their post Junior Certificate year in the 81 post-primary schools and 10 Youthreach Centres in the region were invited to participate.

A passive consent process was used. Each student and each student's parent or guardian was separately informed of the purpose and content of the survey and each were given the opportunity to abstain.

A total of 6,321 students were identified by the schools as available to sit the survey.


30 students self-excluded from the survey across the region (20 by parents, 10 by self).


79.9% of the school-identified cohort sat the survey. 20.1% of the identified students were unavailable on the scheduled day of the survey due to absenteeism or other commitments.


5,051 valid forms were sent to Reykjavik for scanning and data processing and verification.


An additional 47 questionnaires were excluded at the data verification process as invalid.


5,004 responses are included in the Planet Youth GMR 2020 dataset.

Accessing the data

To access the data, please complete a ISSDA Data Request Form for Research Purposes - Pseudonymised Datasets, sign it, and send it to ISSDA by email.

For teaching purposes, please complete the ISSDA Data Request Form for Teaching Purposes - Pseudonymised Datasets, and follow the procedures, as above. Teaching requests are approved on a once-off module/workshop basis. Subsequent occurrences of the module/workshop require a new teaching request form.

Data will be disseminated on receipt of a fully completed, signed form. Incomplete or unsigned forms will be returned to the data requester for completion.
