ABOUT THE STUDY

The Planet Youth study administers a lifestyle questionnaire to 15–16-year-olds in the target community.

In this instance the target community was all 91 of the post primary schools, and Youthreach Centres, in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

Major topics covered in the questionnaire include substance use, peer factors, family factors, school experience, leisure activities, internet and screen use, self-reported physical and mental health, sleep, bullying, adverse life experiences.

The purpose of the study is to examine the risk and protective factors in the lives and social environment of young people and to generate the data that will inform the development of community-based interventions to address same.

Interventions developed are in the four domains of:

  1. Parents and Family

  • CASI (Computer Assisted Self Interviewing). Alchemer was the survey platform used.

Sampling procedures

Based on a pre-defined sampling frame

All students in their post Junior Cert year in the 81 post-primary schools and 10 Youthreach centres in the region were invited to participate.

A passive consent process was used. Each student and each student’s parent or guardian was separately informed of the purpose and content of the survey and each were given the opportunity to abstain.

Response rate

A total of 5,277 valid records are in the Planet Youth 2022 GMR dataset. These are pupils at all ages.

The general target group is 15 and 16 year old pupils in their fourth year of secondary school. In Ireland this means post junior certificate students on their return to school after the summer.  The majority of these pupils go into Transition Year, but some go into 5th year.  We have some schools in GMR that do compulsory TY and one that has no TY.  As it can make it complicated for some schools to isolate their post JC 5th year pupils to do the survey, the option is offered to them to survey all of their TY and 5th year groups.  Amongst the smaller schools and Youthreach Centres some schools choose to survey all of their senior cycle students. This is why there are older pupils in the dataset.

The Department of Education identified 6,095 junior certificate sits in the GMR Region in 2022.  Galway 3,668, Mayo 1,794, and Roscommon 633.

There are 4,128 pupils within the full dataset that answered yes to question 3) Did you sit the Junior Certificate earlier this year? This gives a response rate of 67.7%.

The missing 32.3% are predominately pupils unavailable on the planned day of the survey due to absenteeism or other commitments such as sports trips or work experience etc. Additionally, some schools in the region had a more difficult time with their technology and so had lower response rates than others.

A total of 40 students across the region self-excluded from the survey (25 by parents, 15 by self).
